Big-Time Bassin' Comes to Georgia!

This weekend (August 5 - 8) the FLW Outdoors 2010 Forrest Wood Cup (aka "The World Championship of Bass Fishing" is coming to Lake Lanier and the Gwinnett Center.

While it's not fly fishing, there are a lot of activities available (free!) for the public, including a bunch of stuff to interest kids in fishing.  And once the kids get interested in fishing, hopefully they eventually become fly anglers, and good stewards of the fisheries...which helps us all in the long run.

Fly Fishing 101

If you or someone you know has expressed an interest in learning how to fly fish, Unicoi Outfitters is teaming up with Orvis and Trout Unlimited to offer free introductory lessons every Saturday in July from 9 AM until 12 noon.  We'll have casting lessons as well as sessions on how to properly rig your fly rod all morning long with qualified teachers from the Unicoi professional staff as well as local Trout Unlimited members.  Participants will not only get an introduction to fly fishing but will also receive a $15.00 gift certificate good toward the purchase of any Orvis products plus they'll receive a one year trial membership (new members only) in Trout Unlimited, the country's foremost cold water conservation organization.  We encourage you to please call ahead and sign up for these sessions if possible.  The number in Helen is 706-878-3083 and the number in Blue Ridge is 706-632-1880.  We look forward to having you join us.

FFF Southeastern Council Fly Fishing Show & Conclave - THIS WEEKEND!

That's right...

We've mentioned it several times in our Liars Club newsletter, but want to remind everyone that the time has arrived for the SE Conclave.  It's this weekend, June 4 & 5 (Friday and Saturday) at Unicoi State Park Lodge in Helen.  The organizers have really stepped it up this year, and it promises to be a great show with lots of seminars and demonstrations by some of the best tiers and fly fishers around, including Gary Borger, Jim Casada, Jimmy Jacobs, Bill Oyster, Kent Edmonds, and a host of others.  Check out the official notice on the SE Council website.

Unicoi Kid's Fishing Day

Just wanted to say a quick thanks for now to all those who helped and participated in Unicoi's Kids Fishing Day--it was really good. Thanks to Unicoi Outfitters and their guides, Foothills TU and all the other TU members, NGTO, to all the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and anyone else who brought the kids, and especially to all the kids for all the big smiles on their faces. It's always fun to wade in the water and maybe even hook a fish.

Kid's Fishing Day at Unicoi Outfitters in Helen

UPDATE - Kid's Day is full!  We've got 50 young fly-fishers set up and ready to go in two sessions.  We will let you know which session you are scheduled for.  Bring rod & reel and waders if you have them, but if not, that's OK too.  Thanks to all for your interest in this project....We're looking forward to it.  


Fishing For Fun - That's what we'll be doing April 3 at Unicoi Outfitters. This day will be free fishing for all kids age 6-15 on the private waters at Nacoochee Bend in Helen. The fun will start at 9:30 in the morning and each boy or girl will be on the water about 2 hours with an experienced guide. Deadline for signing up is March 27 and this can be done at Unicoi or by calling the shop at 706-878-3083. Fishing times will be assigned after registration is complete.

Equipment will be supplied by Unicoi, but bring your own fly rod and waders if you have them. All fish will be released. Opportunities in fly tying, fly casting, and other activities will be available.

Lunch will be provided by Chef John Cross.

A parent or guardian must be present on the day of the event.

This will be a fun day - what fishing is really about. All the guides are looking forward to it and can't wait to volunteer.
